15 Bible Verses on Avoiding Comparison

In this world it can be so easy to look at those around us and feel inadequate or that we aren’t achieving at the right pace. We need to remind ourselves that there is no right way to achieve something and that comparison is the biggest thief of our joy. Below are some verses that remind us of our purpose even when we don’t feel it.

‘Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else’

Galatians 6:4

‘For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’

Jeremiah 29:11

‘Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.’

Romans 8:1

‘The Lord will fulfil his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.’

Psalm 138:8

‘Whatever work you do, do it with all your heart. Do it for the Lord and not [to impress others]. Remember that you will get your reward from the Lord. He will give you what you should receive. You are working for the Lord Christ. If anyone does wrong, he will suffer for it. God does not respect one person more than another.’

Colossians 3:23-25

‘Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.’

1 Peter 1:7

‘But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.’

2 Corinthians 12:9-10

‘What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?’

Romans 8:31

‘There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.’

1 Corinthians 12:4-6

‘Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act.’

Psalm 37:5

‘But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.’

1 Samuel 16:7

‘Our bodies are made up of many parts. None of these parts have the same use. There are many people who belong to Christ. And yet, we are one body which is Christ’s. We are all different but we depend on each other. We all have different gifts that God has given to us by His loving-favor. We are to use them. If someone has the gift of preaching the Good News, he should preach. He should use the faith God has given him. If someone has the gift of helping others, then he should help. If someone has the gift of teaching, he should teach. If someone has the gift of speaking words of comfort and help, he should speak. If someone has the gift of sharing what he has, he should give from a willing heart. If someone has the gift of leading other people, he should lead them. If someone has the gift of showing kindness to others, he should be happy as he does it.’

Romans 12:4-8

‘Who among you is wise and understands? Let that one show from a good life by the things he does that he is wise and gentle. If you have jealousy in your heart and fight to have many things, do not be proud of it. Do not lie against the truth. This is not the kind of wisdom that comes from God. But this wisdom comes from the world and from that which is not Christian and from the devil. Wherever you find jealousy and fighting, there will be trouble and every other kind of wrong-doing.  But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure. Then it gives peace. It is gentle and willing to obey. It is full of loving-kindness and of doing good. It has no doubts and does not pretend to be something it is not. Those who plant seeds of peace will gather what is right and good.’

James 3:15-18

‘let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.’

Hebrews 12:1
